Kaya

“Why does he keep calling me?” I said aloud to myself.

“Maybe because you’re ignoring him when he didn’t do anything wrong.”

The sound of Kalia’s voice scared the shit out of me. I was in my closet looking for something to wear and didn’t know I wasn’t alone until she spoke. It had been a week since that day in Noodles and Company when my in-laws walked up to us and tried to shame me for having lunch with a friend. Technically, I wouldn’t be wrong if I pursued things with Ryland, but the disgust on their faces was hard to erase from my mind. It was crazy that even in the letters to both of our parents, Carlos explained why we were divorcing, and they still felt like we should have talked to them. My father had the nerve to tell me that love would come one day.

That was never the problem because Carlos and I loved each other very much. But it wasn’t like that. I can admit that in high school, there was a small crush I had on him, but it was purely physical. Nothing about what I felt for him years later was close to what I felt for Ryland after only seconds of being in his presence. This shit was crazy.

“I just feel so guilty! I wanted us to be friends first and if something happened then okay, but now? I just want the man.”

I broke down into tears and Kalia ran over to me and wrapped her arms around me. I felt so conflicted because I knew what my relationship was and I knew I owed no one an explanation, but their opinions about our situation still crept into my mind. My phone rang again, and before I could decline it, Kalia answered by putting it on speakerphone.

“Kaya?”

The sound of Ryland’s voice soothed something within me. My sobs turned into hiccups and Kalia handed me the phone before leaving my room and closing the door behind her. Our silence continued for a few more seconds. I could hear music playing in the background and tapping on computer keys. That let me know that he was in the office. In our getting to know you conversations, he told me that he refused to put an office in his home because he knew he would never have any downtime if he did.

“Are you okay? I’ve been at the office since six this morning, but I can be to you in less than twenty minutes.”

His urgency put a smile on my face. His care for me was causing me to fall for him faster than I intended. I was happy that there were two months between the last time that we saw each other and spoke. I could admit that the late night phone calls and texting had us building something fast.

“I’m okay, you don’t have to come.” I looked at my watch, and it was a little after two in the afternoon. “Have you eaten? Kalia has the kids, so I can bring you something if you need it.
